Holmen

Holmen offers the very best of Wisconsin—natural beauty, a friendly community and a high quality of life. High bluffs to the east and open prairies to the west create a picturesque setting for this village. Visitors will enjoy the small-town atmosphere that still defines this community.

Enjoying the fair ar Holmen Kornfest.

Holmen’s parks provide lots of opportunities for recreation, featuring ball diamonds, lighted tennis courts, hockey rink, sledding hill, trails and playgrounds. During the summer months, the village’s Aquatic Center provides a great place to cool off, complete with a zerodepth entry pool, waterslides and a play area for children.

Holmen holds several festivals and events throughout the year. Holmen Kornfest in August features fun for the whole family. A special Fun/Run, fireworks, car & cycle show, swap meet, tractor pull and top entertainers are just a few highlights of this late summer festival. September brings the Western Wisconsin High School Regional Rodeo, with competitors coming from around the state.

West Salem

Located just 9 miles east of Onalaska is the community of West Salem. This small, friendly community is big on history, with several homes listed on the National Register of Historic places. Founded in 1851, West Salem is the birthplace and home of the Pulitzer Prize winning author Hamlin Garland. An annual event, Garland Days, held each September, celebrates the life of this community’s favorite son.

The Hamlin Garland Homestead, an octagonal shaped house, is open for tours from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Palmer-Gullickson octagon house, another historic home in West Salem, shares the unusual octagonal shape. Other historic homes and structures throughout the community help to add to the visual charm of West Salem.

Lake Neshonoc is a local favorite for fishing and boating, and camping is available at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Running through town is the La Crosse River State Trail, providing miles of scenic bicycling and hiking. Don’t miss June Dairy Days, a community-wide event.
